Need your Windows 11 product key to reinstall Windows, move to a new drive or check which licence you have? Most people never see their key, because modern PCs activate automatically. This guide shows every way to find it: with Command Prompt (CMD), PowerShell, the Settings app, and the places a key is usually written down. It also explains what to do when there is no key at all.
First: do you actually need the key?
Many Windows 11 PCs use a digital license instead of a typed key. The licence is stored on Microsoft’s activation servers and linked to your hardware (and to your Microsoft account, if you signed in). If you reinstall Windows 11 on the same PC, it usually activates again by itself, with no key needed. Check this before you search:
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Look at Activation state. If it says “Windows is activated with a digital license” or “…linked to your Microsoft account”, you are covered for a reinstall on this PC.
Method 1: Find the Windows 11 product key using CMD
Laptops and pre-built PCs that came with Windows usually have the key stored in the firmware (BIOS/UEFI). You can read it with one command:
- Press Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Paste this command and press Enter:
wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKeyIf a 25-character key appears, that is the key that shipped with your PC. If the result is empty, your PC has no key in the firmware (common for self-built PCs or retail upgrades). Note: newer Windows 11 builds are removing the wmic tool, so if you get “‘wmic’ is not recognized”, use the PowerShell method below.
Method 2: Find the key with PowerShell
Open Terminal or PowerShell as administrator and run:
(Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKeyThis reads the same firmware key as the CMD method and works on all current Windows 11 versions.
Method 3: See the last 5 characters of the installed key
Windows does not show the full installed key for security reasons, but you can confirm which key is in use. In Command Prompt run:
slmgr /dliA small window shows the edition, the licence channel (Retail, OEM or Volume) and the last five characters of the key. This is useful when you want to match a key from an email or receipt with the one installed.
Method 4: Where your key is written down
- Order confirmation email – if you bought a digital key online, search your inbox for “Windows 11” or “product key”.
- Your Microsoft account – keys bought from the Microsoft Store appear under Order history.
- The box or card – physical retail copies have the key on a card inside the box.
- Your account on the store you bought from – at G2U, every key is also shown on the order page in My account.
What the results mean
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A key from CMD or PowerShell | OEM key stored in your PC’s firmware | Write it down; Windows reuses it automatically on reinstall |
| Empty result + “digital license” | Licence stored on Microsoft’s servers | Reinstall freely; sign in with the same Microsoft account |
| Empty result + “Windows is not activated” | No valid licence on this PC | You need a Windows 11 Home or Pro key |
slmgr shows “Volume” | Company / organisation licence | Ask your IT department; it may stop working outside the company |
Be careful with “activate without a key” tricks
Searches like “activate Windows 11 with CMD without a key” lead to scripts and KMS activators. These are not a legal licence, they often stop working after updates, and some contain malware. A genuine key is cheaper than fixing an infected PC.
No key? How to activate Windows 11 properly
- Get a genuine key: Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.
- Go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
- Type the 25-character key and click Next. Windows activates within a few seconds when you are online.
FAQ
Can I use my Windows 10 key for Windows 11?
Yes. Valid Windows 10 Home and Pro keys also activate the matching edition of Windows 11.
Will I lose activation if I change my motherboard?
Possibly. A digital license is tied to your hardware. If it is linked to your Microsoft account, run the Activation troubleshooter and choose “I changed hardware on this device recently”. OEM licences normally stay with the original PC.
Is the BitLocker recovery key the same as the product key?
No. The BitLocker recovery key unlocks an encrypted drive and is usually saved in your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey. It has nothing to do with activation.
